If you have been running AdSense ads on your site for quite a while and you feel that you aren’t making as much cash as you could, in 99.99% of cases you are right. Most people feel frustrated that they can’t generate the revenues they expected, and this is down to traffic levels as well as click through rates.

There are many ways to turn traffic into AdSense traffic and here is a short list of them with a description for each.

The first thing that you need to do is tune up your site’s contents. While for some people this isn’t an option (if you’re running a forum for example it’s a lot harder) most people can make their AdSense sites veritable cash cows.

To begin, you should find out what your site’s keywords are. This is a basic technique in SEO (search engine optimization) known as keyword density verification. A good tool for this job is a Keyword Density, just google the term and you will get many options to choosefrom.

You should then take this list of words and search the Google AdWords keyword tool to find out what other words could be doing betterthen what you currently have.

From that point on try to keep your site focused on the things that appear mostly in the keywordrecommendations you receive. Try to include those keywords, or at least some related keywords as often as you can in the links on your site.

Because of the way Google AdSense works this is a sure way to increase your earnings because you will getsuperior ads in your AdSense banners, similar to how you would get a betterGoogle PageRank

It’s also important that you continuously add new pages to your site. This Keeps the information hungry Google Bot coming back more often and therefore picking up more keywords from your posts.

It’s also very important that you choosethe appropriate formats for your AdSense banners and the best locations for them. While this is a much wider subject you should generally know that the top three Google AdSense formats are: 336×280Huge rectangle 300×250 medium rectangle and 160×600 skyscraper. That said, do not be afraid to test out different formats to see which ones work ideal for your site.

Make sure you choosethe appropriate colors for the ads, as making them too different from your site’s content (or just different in a bad way) is sure to make visitors regard them as banners which have nothing to do with the site itself.

Make sure these ads are positioned where they will generate the highest amount of profit. Most times, that location is said to be right before the beginning of your site’s actual content and right above the fold.

On pages with a long text body, you might find skyscrapers to do better, simply because users get exposed to them for more time. Also, for sites with news or similar items, you might find a good position to be at the bottom of your content, because that is when people arecompleted reading your story and are looking for something else to do.

Of course there are more ways to increase AdSense traffic from your site, but these should serve as a good starting point for income maximization.

Keyword Selection is possibly one of the most difficult things for Internet Marketers who are just starting out. As I’ve mentioned in the previous post that you should be targeting long tail keywords and avoiding one or two letter keywords. As mentioned before, one or two word keywords tend to be highly competitive, and are often controlled by powerful Internet Marketers who have a lot of resources at their disposal. Now, this doesn’t mean that you are absolutely forbidden from using a one or two letter keyword and there are times when it is wise to do so. For example, if you are planning on a long one – three year project in which you will attempt to control a very competitive and juicy keyword, like Insurance, it is wise to start building your keyword now, and keep plugging away at it. Another reason to go for the one or two letter keyword is when you find a keyword that does not have a lot of competition but is still lucrative enough to obtain ranking for.

There are reasons why a one or two word keyword selection may have low competition, for example, it may not have a large search volume per month. That means that, it has 1000 – 3000 monthly searches on Google. For most Internet Marketers, they don’t usually bother with low search volume unless there’s a reason to do so, that reason is a high priced keyword which is $20.00 or more. In cases like these, you can bet that the Internet Marketers will be trying to achieve Google rank for that specific keyword. But if the keyword itself has only 1000 – 3000 searches per month, and the average Pay Per Click is $1.00 – $2.00, then it’s a safe bet that most Internet Marketers will avoid it. That leaves you with a semi decent keyword to rank, that can add to your monthly Adsense earnings.

Google offers a vital tool to help you in selecting the right keywords. It’s called the Google Keyword Tool and you need to become familiar with it if you are going to get into Internet Marketing. I will talk more about the Google Keyword Tool in later posts, but feel free to follow the link and play around with the settings for a while to get comfortable with it.

Getting back to the topic of long tail keywords, as you can probably tell, I don’t often recommend you trying to rank for a non-long tail unless you know what you’re doing. In which case, what I’m telling you is old news to you. But for those of you just starting out, it’s vital that you choose your battles and wars and make sure that you choose how the battle will be fought and what the chances of success will be. In essence, if you don’t think that you have a snow balls chance in hell in ranking for a keyword in the next one – three years, and you can’t wait that long, then the selected keyword is not for you.

I hope that I’ve fully expressed my thoughts on choosing the length of your keyword and hope that you see reason in it. Now, once you’ve decided which type of keyword to battle for, you need to choose the Niche to blog about. There’s a lot of dispute regarding how to tackle keyword selection as it relates to Niches, but the following are a few simple rules that I use and that work for me.

Choose a Niche That is not over-competitive if you are just starting out.

Choose a Niche that can give you multiple Long Tail Keywords to Rank On Google.

Choose a Niche that has a payout of at least $1.00 or more. I prefer $2.00 and up but the higher the keyword is priced, the more competition you’ll find.

Don’t choose a Niche Just because you know something about the topic, be adventurous and dare to talk about things that you may not be completely familiar with. Hint: most people are like sheep and often know a predictable number of facts, dare to think outside that box and be an expert in a Niche that isn’t well know. Make sure that Niche follows the above first 3 Steps.

Lastly, don’t get stuck on a Niche or Keyword selection, if it doesn’t work for you, move on to the next one.

The above steps are just some of the things you should be doing to select your keyword, but you need to remember a few things. Regardless of how well you rank for a word, if your posts are not optimized for Google, your Adsense Pay Per Click will suffer for it. That means that you need to write intelligent posts that help Google feed the right Ads to your site.

There’s a lot more Keyword related information that you need to know, but that’s it for today, my fingers are tired. We’ll talk more about the Google Keyword Tool later and see how it can help you with your keyword Selection.
